4am was written in about half an hour late one night when i couldn't sleep. we had already started recording clumsy and the song was channeled through me. i had yet to write such a personal song but i was on the phone with someone and our conversation opened up some wounds that i was able to put to paper. i then grabbed my acoustic and finished the song. i didn't sleep that night and i frantically waited to call our engineer to tell him meet me at the studio as early as possible. i had the song demoed by the time the band and our producer came in that day.
