Sure, gun control may be effective when it comes to normal citizens like you and I but there is always going to be a way for someone to accuire a hand gun.

oh my goodness, how awful. I could barely comprehend what I was reading... I had to read the first sentence twice.

He had been previously suspended for bringing a weapon to school?!?!

I can't understand an 8-year old having the capacity to understand the concept of threatening to rob someone with a weapon. What the heck has this child been exposed to that he would do something like this? "The boy was charged as a juvenile with numerous counts that police declined to outline". What about the father... will he be charged. Geez!!

they've spent way more money to develop the registry than expected, so his theory is to cut the losses and scrap it.... which then means that all that $ was for nothing instead of correcting the problem and having a viable registry at the end of all the time and money.

Gun registery does not work. I don't know how it is in Ontario but in Saskatchewan and Manitoba every single person I've talked to thinks gun registery is a joke. Criminals are not going to register their guns, and those that have guns for legitimate purposes and register, pay a fee. The thing is, those that register their guns are not going to go out and shoot someone with it.

Secondly it's not like Canada has always had gun registery. We certainly were not like the US before it was introduced and we still wouldnt be if it was axed.

Cause on Law and Order, whenever someone shoots someone, they can usually find out who the gun usually belongs to (though in most cases it was stolen or bought on the black market or some such thing.)

On Law and Order

I think everyone SHOULD have to register their Guns. Therefore, when an unregistered gun is found, its taken away! It won't stop criminals from getting/possessing weapons, but it does keep a handle on those who DO have guns. It may not have the purpose its meant to have, but it does have another useful purpose.

That wouldn't work anyways, though. No matter what kind of regulation you put on gun ownership, there's going to be a way to get your hands on one without being tracked.

However, I think gun registry is still important. If your neighbour owns a gun and accidentally shoots you, then disposes of the gun, the cops should be able to trace the gun back to them. You don't have to be a criminal with a stolen weapon to do harm.

Not a true registry. It is easy to track down the original purchaser in most cases. All firearms are required to have a serial number stamped on them. The serial number is on every invoice from the manufacturer to the final retailer. Every gun purchase in the US is required to have a 4473 form which indicates the purchaser and the description and serial number of the gun(s) sold. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives has a National Tracing Center which is used to track down gun information when one is recovered in a criminal investigation. 4473 forms are kept on file at the retailer for a minimum of 20 years. In the even the business closes, the forms are sent to the ATFE Record Retention Center.
