there are many songs, but I would have to say
ONE by U2 would be probably the number 1 song for me.

I feel love, I feel a power. It comes to me in the darkest hour. And I want to feel it again

a. the postal service is fucking awesome. ben gibbard is my semi-idol.
b. songs:
i. third eye blind - motorcycle drive by. the most "beautiful" song ever recorded. i would highly recommend that you download this even you harbour some highly irrational hipster driven animosity to what is easily the greatest band of our generation (thanks to gravity, that is.)
i.(a) jeff buckley - hallelujah. a very close second.
ii. others
the gloria record - misere (spelling may be incorrect.)
the gloria record - good morning providence
the gloria record - salvation army
the glorai record - start here
collorary: all of TGR's debut album "start here" is more or less beautiful. a good buy, especially for your emo kids.
mineral - gloria
mineral - &serenade
something corporate - down
badly drawn boy - the shining
david usher - st. lawrence river
wilco - poor places
jim o'rourke - eureka
pete yorn - just another
jeff buckley - everybody here wants you

The Something Corporate love in this thread makes me happy. Here're some of my favorite beautiful songs (I won't bother to put Konstantine or songs by other bands that have already been mentioned 8 billion times):
Tori Amos: Winter, Silent All These Years, Jackie's Strength, Pretty Good Year, Sleeps with Butterflies
Smashing Pumpkins: Disarm, To Shiela
Jimmy Eat World: For Me This Is Heaven, Hear You Me, 23
Mae: The Ocean, Anything, The Sun and the Moon
Jack's Mannequin: Rescued, Dark Blue, Bruised, Kill the Messenger (pretty much the whole cd though)
I'm surprised no one had mentioned Tori yet. When I think of simply beautiful songs, Winter is the very first thing I think of.

Down On The Corner - Creedence Clearwater Revival.....its just such a simple yet fun song that you cant help but bop your head to it
Gunnin' - Hedley......another simple but wonderful piece of music
Never Tear Us Apart - INXS....one of my all time favourites
Ziggy Stardust - David Bowie.....love this one
Lightning Crashes - Live.....probably one of the best songs ever written
and of course i must have some OLP content...what better song to pick than.....
THIEF - simply amazing lyrically and melodically....incredible

CCR? Beautiful?
I like CCR, but I wouldn't call any of their songs "simply beautiful".
I really don't think anything could even begin to touch the beautiful-ness of Jeff Buckley's cover of "Hallelujah". That's not even my favorite Buckley, but it's just haunting in such a painfully beautiful way.
