can someone please tell me what this song means?

I've heard two stories about that song, the first being John's son Julian came home from school one day with a watercolor. His son had drawn a picture of his friend lucy flying through the night sky. The diamonds are stars and lucy is literally in the sky with the diamonds.understandablehorror wrote:can someone please tell me what this song means?

Then of course, the LSD version of it .. nobody knows for sure what the song is definitely about .. maybe a little of both. Then again people say he wrote it while on LSD, just taking imagery from the painting and basically tripping out. Which I can see happening as well. Either way it's a great song .. open to interpretation. I don't think there's any deep hidden meaning to it .. just a cool song.
Oh and in interviews John was pretty adamant in saying that Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds came from his son's picture. Apparently a childhood and lifelong friend of Lennon, Pete Shotton, backed up Lennon's explanation. Whether the song lyrics or the song itself were what John saw on an acid trip or whether he was just writing another imaginative nonsensical song, that is your interpratation really.
